Joseph Rudyard Kipling was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist, who wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. The Kipling’s writer masterpiece is characterized by portrayals of people, history, and culture of his time, so Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. 
Published in 1888, “To be held for reference” is a short story, included in “Plain Tales from the Hills”, a collection of stories of life in India.
