To Son, Love Father is an attempt to give advice I should have been given when much younger. I was read poems by Robbie Burns as the key advice for life, much of which was useful, but not quite specific enough for the sixties and seventies. I did remember to 'conceal myself as well I could from critical dissection', but was not so good at that age of 'gently scanning my brother man, still gentler sister women.' Some of this advice is of course specific to the age we live in now, but most is not. As a starting Physics teacher we didn't have an internet or even computers. Having been in business brought home 'the best laid schemes of mice and men' as the 'promised joy' evaporated. So it's good luck to sons and daughters, and 'may prudence, fortitude and truth, erect your brow undaunting.'
