Ivan Coyote is the author of 11 previous books, most recently the acclaimed Gender Failure (with Rae Spoon). All of Ivan’s books have gone into multiple printings. They are regarded as a premier storyteller and performer, often accompanied on stage with musicians.

Tomboy Survival Guide is a memoir told in stories and pictures, in which Ivan recounts the pleasures of growing up a tomboy in Canada’s Yukon, and how they learned to embrace their tomboy past when they later identified as lesbian and finally a trans person. Divided into four sections—“Then,” “Since,” “Because,” and “Heart”—the book offers hope and reassurance to those who are different.

This book is not necessarily a book for young people (though it can be read by youth); more precisely it is a book for adults so they can learn to embrace their past.

Ivan’s experience as a seasoned performer will lend itself to numerous appearances both as a solo performer at festivals and as part of their group, which performs “Tomboy Survival Guide” as a spoken word/musical show.
