Trilce, poems written in jail for political crimes by César Vallejo, are markedly different from the idyllic poems of The Black Heralds.

Trilce is more intense, more original than the first volume.

The poet recognizes his imprisonment as a symbol of the struggle of man against all limitations.

Vallejo's poetic vocabulary is unique. Vallejo creates new words of their own, often two words into one; playing in the multiple meaning of words and the similarity of sound between words.

Vallejo saw beyond the obvious limitations of government society and culture, man is imprisoned by time, space and biological limitations.

Since man is unable to make sense of life, he has no real existence and lives only through the sense of futility slowly destroying him and has become a time when all human values seem to have failed.

César Vallejo (1892-1938) was a Peruvian expatriate, known for the authenticity and originality of his writings.
