This essay argues that North Korean elites are “true believers” in the Kim personality cult. In his research, the author travelled to North Korea and discussed sensitive subjects with his North Korean guides. Making use of unconventional research methods and primary sources, it argues that the underlying stability of North Korea may be stronger than most would suspect or hope. “This McFarland E-Single originally appeared in the Spring 2014 issue of North Korean Review (ISSN 1551-2789).
