Sam struggles with her relationship with Jack Nolan, choosing him over the other two men in her life, David and Fritz. She never imagines that she is still in danger after the man who had stalked and attacked her, Robert Walsh, is dead. She killed him, she knows he is gone forever, and doesn't think its possible that danger still haunts her. Now she is being hunted by Robert Walsh's cousin, Arnie Webb. She doesn't realize that her situation has suddenly become a means to an end, to destroy the deadly, corrupt Chief of Police, Eugene Matthews:
Uncrushable Quote:
The Governor sat back and took a big drink of his beer. “Okay, Secret Agent McMorris, why are you here? If you are as good as they are all saying you probably know. Let’s see some juice.”
Frank smiled. “Local police, Silverman, tells me that there’s a local problem, the prosecuting attorney lets me know it’s a problem that can’t be handled through regular channels. And Biggs, US Marshall, lets me know there’s probably dead bodies involved.
“Now, the clincher is a governor. He would be involved if state funds are at stake, if it makes his state, and as collateral damage, him, look incompetent. Or, if it is such a large, monster of a problem that multiple agencies have to be pulled in. It is obviously covert and you need someone to fix, or uncover, or deliver something that is probably not within the realm of legality. Also, this undercover project, if it fails, will be an orphan, and all of you at this table will have never heard of it. Or me.”
Emmett finished his third taco and grinned at Frank. “Sometimes being governor is very intteresting. Now seems to be one of those times. We have an idea of how we might use you to assist us in this investigation. Perhaps you’ve heard of Jack Nolan?”
“Yes.”
“His wife, Samantha?”
He shook his head. “Should I?”
“Samantha Nolan is the intended victim of a kidnapping. The man who is planning it is being supported by none other than Eugene Matthews, our very powerful, very corrupt Chief of Police. We could take Eugene down but we would never be able to reveal his numerous associates. We estimate this ransom will be twenty to thirty million, the Chief will probably receive at least a third. Mrs. Nolan has friends. Many. Who would pay the amount quickly and without question. Millionaires, some of whom you may meet.”
Frank looked around the tables. “Will this Mrs. Nolan know?”
“No.” Biggs said.
