Animal models play crucial roles in the continuum of experimental activities that make up biomedical research. Such in vivo modes are especially important in proof-of-principle experiments and in establishing the preclinical safety and efficacy data required for progressing to human clinical trials. A practical understanding of the choice, care and use of animal models is thus expected and required of all biomedical researchers. However, while both legislations and the practice of laboratory animal science have made great advances in the last decade and have impacted significantly on the use of animal models, this corpus of knowledge is not readily available in formats easily digestible to the average biomedical researcher. This book fills this gap in knowledge and provides material not easily sourced by the average biomedical researcher, such as current information on bioimaging, occupational health and biosafety, animal protocol design and histological-pathological support.

Contents:

  • Scientific Considerations and Choice of Species
  • Regulatory Considerations in the Use of Animal Models
  • Animal Handling and Surgical Procedures
  • Basic Animal Investigative Methods
  • Animal Welfare Considerations
  • Safety Management of an Animal Facility
  • Supporting Facilities Design
  • The Development of Comprehensive Animal Facilities in Singapore

Readership: Biomedical researchers including professional researchers (basic scientists, clinician-scientists), research assistants, and laboratory technical staff; students and teachers in biomedical studies (undergraduate, masters, doctoral students); pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry personnel; health legislation executives and administrators; veterinarians and animal care facility staff.
Key Features:

  • A valuable source of practical information to both the established and novice biomedical researcher. It draws on the accumulated current experience of basic and clinician-scientist researchers; veterinarians; and legal, statistical and technical experts
  • Packages all the information required to conceptualize and conduct experiments using animal models to its logical conclusions in a single handy volume
  • Includes information on the day-to-day management of a comprehensive animal facility
