Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus were both searching for a nautical route to India when they set out on their voyages, in 1497 and 1492, respectively. Columbus sailed west while da Gama sailed east after voyaging south to the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa. My book looks at the time at the end of the 15th century when journeys of this type were uncertain, mysterious and dangerous. I hope that readers will appreciate the awe that sailors experienced when they set out on these journeys. Vasco da Gama was considered a success because he actually found India at the end of his destiny. He also brought back riches to his country, making Portugal and Europe a center of the spice trade.
