The Waif of the Cynthia (1885) is the story of the great scholar Dr. Schwaryencrona, who has adopted a boy named Erik. The doctor has promised the guardians of the boy that he will provide him with education and better opportunities. On a quest to find the real parents, the doctor and the child have a series of adventures.

Famous for predicting atomic submarines, moon flight, and dinosaurs in the middle of the earth, an aging Jules Verne turned his prophetic eye towards predicting mini-wafers, or "waifs" as he called them. (Mind you, this is years before Nabisco had ever dreamed of the necessary technology!) I won't spoil the book by telling you what a "Cynthia" is, but I'll give you one clue: it's a piano!
