Megan Collier, an M.E. with the Syracuse Medical Examiner's Office is called in to perform an autopsy on a victim whose heart has been removed in a mysterious and unusual fashion. The Chief of Police doesn't believe her explanation, and bucking heads with the bureaucracy is just another problem she has to contend with. The murders continue over the course of the next few weeks, with each victim missing a different organ. To make matters worse, one of the victims is Johnny Giametti, Jr, son of the local mob boss.

Told to "lay low" after speaking out against departmental idiocy when she conjectures the killer may not be human, Megan decides to pursue the mystery without her department's support. She has few resources and is in a race against time to find answers before she ends up the next victim.
