Whilst fleeing relentless assassins, a sidekick and his Hero must rescue a kidnapped girl, right an ancient wrong and be reconciled with an old enemy, whilst still providing all their own meals. Set in a world not unlike Dark Age Europe, but with better plumbing, this is the story of two companions forced into premature retirement by their numerous powerful enemies, most of whom want them dead and some of whom are actively pursuing this ambition. One of the pair, Henwas, is a genuine warrior hero and the other, Mac Oag, isn’t. The tale is told by Mac Oag, an individual whose ancestry is uncertain, possibly even to himself. Diminutive, grumpy and emotionally opposed to exercise, he has to steer his Hero through an escalating series of strange encounters with farm-boys, brigands and hermits whilst debating history, philosophy and social responsibility with heavily-armed representatives of a variety of mutually antagonistic cultures.
And somewhere in all this there is even an elephant.
