In the winter of 1955, a baby is abandoned on the doorstep of Mariam Jamiel’s house in the Bokaap, Cape Town’s historic Malay quarter. The baby is the daughter of Sureya, Mariam’s disgraced daughter – and Mariam is shocked to find an apparently white child in the basket.

Jasmine grows up in apartheid-era South Africa, a beautiful fair-skinned girl who has to hide the truth about her ancestry if she wants to achieve her dreams of becoming a lawyer. After a short stint as a prosecutor and an ill-fated entanglement with Johann Prinsloo, the glamour boy of Cape Town’s legal fraternity who has a dark secret or two of his own, she settles down to a successful career as an advocate, while her beloved uncle, Hassan, establishes himself as a top fashion designer.

After defending a young girl charged with a sensational murder, Jasmine takes an overseas holiday, and during an unexpected rendezvous in Paris with Judge Ralph Benson, the owner of the La Rochelle wine estate, love blossoms.

Time moves on, South African politics are changing, and Jasmine marries the man of her dreams. But despite the changed attitudes in a new South Africa, she has to go on living a lie, and hiding the truth from Ralph, until a family tragedy reveals all.

Loads of courtroom drama – inspired by author Wendy Clark’s own experiences as a career prosecutor – the world of fashion and life on a Cape wine estate combine to create this memorable novel.
