“Womanhood Don’t Begin in Menstrual Cycles” is Yecheilyah’s third collection of poetry. The theme for this piece is Womanhood and covers the love, life, marriage, identity and proper role of the so called Black woman. While womanhood does actually begin in menstrual cycles, many young women in the African American community are not taught true womanhood today. The menstruation isn’t seen as the great “Welcome to Womanhood” “Rite of Passage” that it was centuries ago, or that it still is in other countries and cultures. A menstrual cycle does not mean that her mind will necessarily be on the same accord with her body, and that she has made the proper transition from Girlhood to Womanhood.
