Johnnie Howell served in the Second World War with the Sixty First Engineer Combat Battalion in the five major battles of Europe: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a part of the flank guards on the two principal drives across France: the Filaise Gap pocket with the First Army and the drive to Nancy and Metz, France, with Patton’s Third Army.
