Yolande Pompey was a contender for the world light heavyweight in the 1950s. An orphan from Princes Town, Trinidad, Pompey's most prominent fight came against world champion Archie Moore in 1956. My e-book looks at how Yolande Pompey ascended the ranks of boxing in the West Indies. Soon he was accompanied to London by his manager and be became a bonafide threat to win the light heavyweight title. The majority of Yolande's fights occurred in the U.K., with only two of his bouts in the United States. His opponents included noteworthy names in the pugilistic world aside from Archie Moore. Among the men he faced in the ring included future world champion Dick Tiger and former world champion Randy Turpin. My research includes round by round coverage of Pompey's significant bouts. My text was drawn from Associated Press and United Press International coverage that was reported in newspapers in the United States. I have also taken information that was first reported in Sports Illustrated articles of the 1950s and 1960s. Readers will be transported in time to an earlier era and find out more about a British West Indian fighter whose career has thus far been neglected by writers.
