Zakari is the story of a boy shipwrecked in Japan in 1855. He undergoes physical, mental and spiritual changes in a foreign country that is itself undergoing rapid changes after forced exposure to the technically stronger western nations. There is tension and confusion as Zakari becomes more Japanese and some Japanese more westernized. Zakari strived to succeed even though he is caught up in intrigue and used as a pawn by major political figures. He finally finds love rank and a family only to loose all and be confined to his lands. He is recalled to take part in the revolution that sees the Emperor Meiji restored as supreme leader and takes part in the rapid westernization of Japan.
