He was eerily tattooed with hand prints on his neck and octopus-like tendrils around his thighs and waist, so like her own bruises, from the things in her nightmare.
“What’s wrong, Cassie? Is this too much for you? I apologize. I can cover up if that makes you feel more comfortable.”
“I-I can’t help but notice your tattoos,” was all she managed to say. Seeing that she didn’t ask for him to put his clothes back on, he slipped into bed.
“You must be exhausted. Come. Lie down,” he patted the space beside him. “Sleep. You’re safe with me tonight.” His words and his very voice rang like a rich, clear bell inside her.
“Safe? What do you mean?” she asked.
He didn’t answer. Instead, he waited for her to be calm enough to approach the bed. When she was within arm’s reach, he held his hand out to her. Cautiously she traced the inky patterns on his arms, finding nothing else but warm skin under her fingertips. Funny that she did not notice these the first night she met him. She could not remember how long his sleeves were, but she should have seen a glimpse of them on his neck or wrists, where the tattoos end. Or started? She must have been too focused on his face and the feel of his body to notice anything else.
Her anxiety ebbed as she finally took his hand and let herself be led to the bed.
He was a man. He was human. No nightmares here...
