The post-game bonfire at North High College was going strong. Earlier that evening, the North High Polar Bears had beaten the Roosevelt High College team in the state’s football semi-finals. Next week, the Polar Bears would play Iowa City’s team for the 4-A state championship.
And that was bad news, Kristen Olsen thought grimly. As head cheerleader, she went to every game. Hell, she’d been going to every game since she was five years old, largely because her dad was the team’s coach. Now her brother Brent was the star quarterback, she was head cheerleader, and everything was great—except that the Iowa City team was undefeated and three-time state champs.
“We’re fucked,” she muttered, mostly to herself, but her best friend, Molly Hayward, also on the cheerleading squad, heard her and giggled.
“Potty-mouth,” she said.
“Well, it’s true,” Kristen replied. “Iowa City’s gonna destroy us. My dad’s contract is up for renewal, and Brent heard there are going to be scouts from all the Big Twelve colleges at the game. We need to win that game, Moll.”
Molly tossed her blonde curls, which were gilded by the light of the fire. “Look, Kris, I want us to win, too. After all, I am dating your brother, and I’d like to see him get a scholarship to a good college. But I don’t know what we can do to prevent Iowa City’s team from running all over us. It’s not like we can go out on the field and sack their quarterback or something.”
Kristen, who had been moving towards the bonfire, stopped in her tracks and turned to grab her friend’s shoulders. “That’s it! Molly, tell all the girls they need to come to my house tomorrow afternoon, around 2 o’clock. I’ve got an idea of how we can make sure our guys win.”

“We’re gonna what?” Veronica Morehead, the youngest girl on the cheer squad, stared at Kristen in disbelief.
