Rachel McTavish is a normal 14 year old girl living in King's Park, on Long Island, New York in 1942. Her mother had passed the previous Christmas season, making this year's season apprehensive and challenging. She has had to assume her mother's role in the family along with the many demands accompanying that position. She has a younger brother Ben and her dad for whom she cares for immensely. She is having a difficult time reconciling why God would take her mother and best friend, when she so desperately needed her company and influence, especially at Christmastime. She is befriended by an elderly lady, the closest neighbor. Rachel enjoys her friendship and learns from her many homemaking skills that are necessary and essential in everyday life. Her friend's husband suddenly passes just before Christmas making their bond even more strong as they both share the pain of life without a loved one during the holiday season. It was on Christmas eve while waiting for her dad to return from the city that Rachel took an introspective view of her life for the past year and came to realize her mother's promise that she would be near had been realized and came to her more clearly allowing herself to see from an improved and mature perspective. On Christmas morning Rachel's venture to take her friend a small gift as a token of her love turned into a miraculous event changing her perspective and life forever.
