‘If someone asked you what you wanted to be, forever, what would you have said?’

‘Forever?’ Gary took a moment to think about it. ‘I think I’d have said Gary.’ He held his arms out in front of him, studying his hands. ‘Well, there we go,’ he added. ‘I’m the best Gary now. There aren’t any other Garys. I win the Gary contest!’

‘Be the best you could ever be,’ Ibro mused. ‘A lot of people on Earth would have asked for that.’

Gary glanced out of the window, towards the shadow of Earth, the cobwebs of light suspended within it. One strong gust of wind, he thought, would blow the Earth clean. It wouldn’t be long now.

‘Yup,’ Gary said. ‘I win.’

-

On a space station orbiting the dead planet Earth, two astronauts reflect on being the last men alive...

On a rickety wooden cart, a young boy meets those condemned to the Ship of Fools...

On another plane, a renowned sorcerer stops at nothing to expose the truths of the universe...

And in the near future, a teen sits at his computer, an archaeologist of Web 1.0...

These and many more are contained within EARTH and Other Small Things, a short story collection from Dan Cotehele.
