These chronicles of Malay humour are commonly shared between people of different geography. For example, in Arab-speaking countries, a common theme in most tales of humour and those exemplifying a moral code revolves around a man referred to as Johar (Juha); in the Persian-speaking milieu where the theme remains the same, revolves around a man referred to as Mulla Nasruddin; in the Turkish-speaking milieu these narratives revolve around a man referred to as Hoca Nasruddin; whereas in the Malay-speaking worked, the names Abu Nawas and Pak Pandir are commonly identified with humorous narratives, wit and tales which reflect codes of moral conduct.

About the Author:

SYED ALI TAWFIK AL-ATTAS, who holds a doctorate and was Director-General of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia, is a serious scholar, writer and accidental comedian.
