Based on lectures held at the 8th edition of the series of summer schools in Villa de Leyva since 1999, this book presents an introduction to topics of current interest at the interface of geometry, algebra, analysis, topology and theoretical physics. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers in physics or mathematics, and offers an introduction to the topics discussed in the two weeks of the summer school: operator algebras, conformal field theory, black holes, relativistic fluids, Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, renormalization methods, spectral geometry and index theory for pseudo-differential operators.

Contents:

  • Some Aspects of Operator Algebras in Quantum Physics (Andrés F Reyes-Lega)
  • K3 en Route from Geometry to Conformal Field Theory (Katrin Wendland)
  • Geometric Aspects of Black Holes (Bruno Carneiro da Cunha)
  • Real Relativistic Fluids in Heavy Ion Collisions (Esteban Calzetta)
  • From Symplectic Groupoids to Double Structures (Kirill Mackenzie)
  • Lie Algebroids and Characteristic Classes (Paul Bressler)
  • Introduction to Pseudodifferential and K-theoretic Methods in the Index Theory for Boundary Value Problems (Elmar Schrohe)
  • Counting an Infinite Number of Points: A Testing Ground for Renormalization Methods (Li Guo, Sylvie Paycha and Bin Zhang)
  • The BV-Algebra Structure of the Hochschild Cohomology of the Group Ring of Cyclic Groups of Prime Order (Andrés Angel and Diego Duart)

Readership: Researchers in mathematical physics and quantum physics.
Key Features:

  • Unique style aimed at a mixed readership of mathematicians and physicists
  • Written by experts, chapters are self-contained and lead the reader from the fundamentals up to cutting edge research topics
  • Ideal for self-study or use in advanced courses or seminars
