The Paleo diet refers to an eating regime that attempts to get us back in touch with our evolutionary roots by eating foods that we are biologically engineered to eat. During the Paleolithic era our ancestors thrived as hunter-gatherers. Their diet consisted mainly of meat, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. While the world has certainly changed from back then, our genetics have remained fairly constant. This means that our bodies are still designed to eat this way. Homo sapiens during the Paleolithic era were lean, muscular, agile and full of energy. Today, man is stressed, overweight, unfit and riddled with disease. So what caused this major physical deterioration? Blame can be laid firmly at the feet of agriculture! We “evolved” from hunter-gatherers who ate real, wholesome, natural foods, to farmers who ate processed dairy products and grains. The problem is our bodies didn’t adjust at the same rate to accommodate these new types of foods in our diets. The Paleo diet attempts to rectify the damage done since the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago and put us onto a healthier path. This eating plan eradicates everything that is not pure, namely, grains, dairy, refined sugars and alcohol. These foods wreak havoc in our bodies and are believed to be one of the root causes of many of the life threatening diseases that face mankind today. Research has shown that hunter-gatherer populations were free from the illness that plagues Western societies today. In fact, studies conducted into modern hunter-gatherer societies indicate that they too, are largely disease free. This speaks volumes for adopting the Paleo lifestyle. There is one simple premise to follow in order to be successful on the Paleo diet – “if the cavemen didn’t eat it, then you shouldn’t either”!
