Bjørnstjerne Martinius Bjørnson was a Norwegian writer. He was the first Norwegian Nobel laureate. He matriculated at the University of Christiania in 1852, and soon began to work as a journalist, especially as a dramatic critic. His works made a profound impression in his own country, and made him popular throughout the world. This novel was published in 1890. The author narrates the story about difficult life of peasants. In the book, the author described Norwegian religious life. It is the one story by which he was most widely known outside his native country.
