George Henry Borrow (5 July 1803 – 26 July 1881) is an english writer and traveler. He wrote his novels based on his travel writing and experience, meetings while traveling through Europe. Over the course of his wanderings, he developed a close affinity with the Romani people of Europe, who figure prominently in his work. His the most famous books are The Bible in Spain, the autobiographical Lavengro, and The Romany Rye, about his time with the English Romanichal (gypsies). During his life, he wrote many works that remain popular today.
"Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest” (1851) is a great novel by George Henry Borrow. The protagonist, whose name is never mentioned, is born in the family of an officer in a militia regiment and is brought up in various barrack towns in England, Scotland and Ireland. After serving an apprenticeship to a lawyer he moves to London and becomes a Grub Street hack, an occupation which gives him ample opportunities to observe of low-life in London.
