Nothing looked as if it had changed. Her desk sat prominently in the middle of the room and documents were spread out across the oak surface.
She didn’t see Jake at first, but when her eyes made a sweeping pass of the room, she spotted him near the window, looking down at the busy city street below.
Looking at the outline of Jake from behind, Sheri couldn’t see any change in his build. His muscled arms stood out, showing clearly from his short-sleeved shirt. She couldn’t find anything different about him from the day he’d walked out on her. She closed her eyes for a second and visualized how he’d looked when they last made love. The image of his tanned body rising above her and melding with her milky whiteness kept drifting through her head.
The warm night they’d made love on the roof of Jake’s apartment held all the romance any woman could have asked for in her lifetime. The sky had been full of stars twinkling overhead and only a half moon lit the darkness around them. The erotic thought brought a yearning in her that she thought she’d forgotten long ago. Again, the thoughts filled her head that everything had changed and seeing Jake settled in her office proved it.
"You can come in," Jake’s deep, husky voice echoed off the window pane.
She listened to the low, sexy sound she’d always loved but had forgotten since they’d parted. Now, it was all coming back to her in a rush. She felt a weakness in her legs as she silently listened to him. She didn’t want to experience the old excitement and start all over when it came to Jake. He was in her past and should remain there.
