There were times when Wendy felt a little impatient with Beth. They’d been friends for years and decided to move across the country from a small town in Indiana to North Dakota, with the hope of making a go of the advertised ranch they’d found in the local newspaper. Using their savings for a down payment, they didn’t find the ranch an ideal paradise.
When they arrived at their destination they found more than one problem to contend with. There were so many things needing fixing that Wendy felt overwhelmed.
“There’s going to be a rodeo in Wilson next week,” Beth murmured. “We’re both excellent riders and could enter the barrel riding contest. Look how many times we practiced the event at your Uncle Roy’s place in Indiana. I say we enter and do it again. You have to admit this is a fast way to make the money we need.”
Wendy Carrington was quiet for several seconds remembering the many times she’d ridden her horse around strategically placed barrels in the fenced in corral back in Indiana. Beth’s idea kept running through her head at lightning speed. Beth could have something since we need the money in a hurry. How else can we make wages like they do at the rodeos? But the downside is we have to win to make the money.
“Well, what do you think?” Beth’s animated features filled Wendy’s line of vision.
“I suppose it’s worth a try,” Wendy agreed, although a little reluctance filled her tone.
