You. Have. Cancer.
With those words, Michael Friedman, then 16 years old, began an intense 7-month rollercoaster of discovery, love, support and life. His father Allan was there with him every step of the way, and documented the entire journey through regular email updates to his family and closest friends.
In his book, My Story: A Parent's Journey Thorugh His Child's Cancer, Allan uses those updates, along with Facebook posts and personal recollections, to relate his and Michael's experience, and shares his own personal insight as he watches his child go through multiple surgeries, 14 rounds of chemotherapy and endless pokes, prods and hospital trips. Through humour, observation, personal reflection and a decision to treat Michael's cancer as simply another of life's adventures, Allan takes us on a revealing and eye-opening ride through a life-altering and potentially life-threatening circumstance, and he does it with humour and grace. It is an uplifting look into how one family chose to face adversity head-on, and how they conquered it through determination, laughter and dignity.
This is the story of one teen's journey through his father's eyes -- the highs, the lows, the soul-searching...and the love.
Author Bio: Allan Friedman, B.A., B.Ed., is Director of Operations for an international coaching company. He spends his days at work moving from one project to the next, taking care of clients and ensuring that all adinistrative responsibilities are running smoothly. An accomplished pianist, he has been involved in Musical Theatre since he was 15 years old, and now enjoys working after hours as a Musical Theatre Director and accompanist for Middle and High School productions. Allan is also a father of 5, and when not hunched over his iPad, iPhone or piano, he spends a lot of his time as driver, cook, cleaner, ironer, and chief bottle washer. His greatest joy, however, is just hanging out at home with his wife and kids, happily knowing that everyone is together and has everything they need.
After spending every minute with his son, Michael, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16, Allan was compelled to write this book to share what the journey was like from a father's perspective and to search for a measure of peace after this intense experience. Allan was born and raised in Toronto, and currently resides with his family in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada.
