Queen, the epitome of rock in the 70s and 80s and one of the most bootlegged bands ever in the history saw its origin with the classic line-up of Freddie Mercury(lead vocals), Brian May(guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor(drums, vocals) and John Deacon(bass guitar). Melding glam-rock with hard-rock, Queen was the rock’s bombastic pinnacle. Queen’s multi-tracked recordings, ornate, and typical in-your-face songs resulted to worldwide sales of more than 130 million records. Queen began in the 70s, providing expression to the extremes and thrills of that era.
“We’re the Cecil B. DeMille of rock and roll, always wanting to do things bigger and better,” said Freddie Mercury. Exhibiting capacity for reinvention with their keen intelligence the Queen drew from pop culture, visual media and contemporary music, blowing it all up into a multimedia spectacle grounded in solid rock. Beyond the flashy exterior, however, they were absolute example of unique having genuine power and daring in their music, ranging from the the driving disco-funk of “Another One Bites the Dust” to the neo-rockabilly swagger of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a densely layered rock operetta invented by the Queen is believed by many to be one of the greatest songs of all time. They also produced these highly regarded anthems, “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You”. These two have always been the Queen’s most beloved chant-along songs.
Queen’s highest-charting album was 1980’s The Game which charted at number one for 5 straight weeks. The album also also produced their two biggest singles, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Another One Bites the Dust.” Queen was always amazing at live performances and mounted ever-more grandiose live shows. Queen was one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world, and their performance at 1985's Live Aid is regarded as one of the greatest in rock history.
The sales of the band generally range from 150 million to 300 million albums, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. They received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Phonographic Industry in 1990, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
The group ended with the death of Freddie, due to bronchopneumonia (a complication of AIDS) in 1991 and retirement of John Deacon in 1997. Since then, May and Taylor have infrequently performed together. Still, the band’s status as one of rock’s most legendary bands only continues to grow.
