The faith given by Moses was designed to equip people to live together
in a peaceful, productive community. It was practical, useful and
God-centered. However, by the time of Jesus, it had evolved– or
deteriorated– into an oppressive, legalistic system based upon fear and
guilt. Jesus’ message reversed that and a liberating, fulfilling faith for living
productive, peaceful lives appeared again on the scene.
The years have affected that faith in many ways, and today we have a broad
variety of expressions of Christianity. They range in dynamics from loving
and liberating to oppressive and legalistic. We have hundreds of leaders
of little sects that offer uneducated understandings that appeal to some
popular values and prejudices. Some are harmless. Some are destructive to
the soul.
