Birdie O'Conner was born without a roof in her mouth Her mothers dream is to take her to England and have an operation so she can have a voice and lead a normal life. Her mother dies before this can be acheived. Poverty, hardship makes this dream seem impossible. Birdie lives and works for a farmers wife Kate and when she goes to visit her sister in Manchester England she takes Birdie with her. Her sister Moira uses Birdie as a servant. Kate returns to Ireland leaving Birdie with Moira. The surgeon befriends Birdie and she goes to London with him and his sister to have the operation. This is a very traumatic time for a child of eleven. With fortitude and determination she goes through the whole process of having a roof put into her mouth. In hospital she meets Bill and they become good friends.
Misunderstandings occur when Birdie is well again and is tricked into going back to Moira. Will this young girl ever have a happy life and enjoy a normal childhood. This is the first story in a trilogy.
