A short story written by HG Wells, first published in April 1904 in the magazine Strand Magazine and included in a 1911 collection of Wells stories, The Country of the Blind and Other This is one of Wells' best-known short stories and his prominent articles in the literature dealing with blindness.

When trying to reach the top of the undefeated ridge of Parascotopetl, a fictitious mountain in Ecuador, a mountaineer named Núñez slips and falls to the other side of the mountain. At the end of its descent, along a snowy slope in the shadow of the mountain, it finds a valley, separated from the rest of the world by steep precipices on all sides. Without the knowledge of Núñez, he has discovered the legendary Country of the Blind.
