Emily knew she shouldn't listen in, but her father was talking to a soldier. She couldn't help it.
They were talking about the war! Now that the Revolutionary War was on, she had to learn all that she could. After all, she was her father's child. He was very patriotic.
"General Rawdon is going to leave Fort Ninety-Six," the soldier sad. "He will take his men to the south. He will leave a few men there to make it look like the fort is still busy."
This is the best time for us to attack. But we do not have enough men. We need to get word to General Sumter! He needs to send help!"
"No one will take the message?" Emily's father asked.
"No one. General Greene even offered extra pay to any soldier willing to take it. No one will."
"If only I were not so ill," her father said. "I would take it."
With that, the soldier left.
"It would be a dangerous ride for a soldier," Emily thought. "But they would never suspect a woman."
Emily thought about it. The more she thought, the braver she got. She could take the message. She could help win the war for independence!
