Game fixing scandals in college basketball occurred in 1945, 1951 and 1961 throughout the United States. Major basketball powers were caught up in this, beginning with City College of New York, which won the 1950 NIT and National Championships of NCAA basketball. After the CCNY scandal there were similar ones at the University of Kentucky and Bradley University. The UK team was compromised by two of its star players, i.e. Alex Groza and Ralph Beard. The University of North Carolina was placed on probation for a year after recruiting violations were discovered by investigators in 1960. The last of the group of basketball scandals spread into North Carolina by 1959, but investigations and prosecution inquiries did not begin until March 1961. Three NC State players were caught accepting money for shaving points in the 1959 Dixie Classic and a number of Atlantic Coast Conference regular season contests.
