Braving blizzards, tackling thunderstorms and getting blown off the road, they had been chased by dogs, attacked by killer bees and rerouted by the bubonic plague.
Their quest to promote all things solar had seen them followed by the police, accosted by goat herders and giving a talk - from a dog kennel - somewhere in the Deep South of America.
