Canadian Carmen Bourcier accepts a teaching job in Thailand. The initial one year contract becomes a five year stay in a world where everything is new to her. Her search for adventure ultimately becomes a journey of self discovery.

Growing up in government housing and being painfully shy, she found it difficult to fit in. She befriends Veronica, a neighborhood girl three years older than herself. Veronica has just returned home to visit her family after having been put into foster care. Together the two awkward teens bond and mature in a world full of harsh realities and uncertain outcomes.

Scenes of her new daily life in Thailand are alternated with memories of the friendship she shared and her family back home. Even as the two friends mature and go their separate ways in life they are linked with the bond of a strong friendship.

There’s a Gecko on My Wall is a firsthand view of life in Thailand experienced through the eyes of a woman living abroad for the first time.

There’s a Gecko on My Wall is also a memoir dedicated to everyone who ever had a best friend and anyone who longs to be comfortable in their own skin.
