On the one hand, kindergarten teacher Molly had her good job, her boyfriend, now fiancé, her neat little house and a good reputation. On the other hand, she had Rafe McNamara, the town's bad boy who was the rogue even among his fellow members of the Devil's Own. The choice seemed pretty clear so why was Molly waffling? Why was it so difficult to tear herself away from Rafe?
_____
I felt a painful twist when I registered the disappointment in his voice.
"Rafe..."
"Don't touch me." I stopped cold and watched with my eyes wide as he walked away, his shoulder wide, stretching his signature leather jacket and I couldn't believe the pain I felt at the sight.
"No, no. Don't do this to me," I ran after him and pulled him to my chest. He struggled a little although I could tell it was half-hearted. I tugged on his jacket and hung on, burying my head on his back. The familiar scent filled me with longing and I dug my fingers deeper into his chest.
He shrugged me off and turned around. "I told you, don't play with me," he hissed, his hands gripping my wrists tightly. "Take it or leave it, Miss Molly. I don't even care about that wimp anymore, but if you can't tell me you want me, I'm out."
"I — I do," I whispered, my eyes wide as I watched his eyes darkened, anger radiating, thick and heavy in the air around us.
"I don't believe you."
"I do, Rafe, I do," I said, my voice raised and I was afraid tears were going to fall anytime. I hated that it was my sole reaction to any kind of extreme emotion I had but there it was. "Don't walk away from me. I can't take it."
I wanted to believe I saw his eyes soften but then he said, "Prove it."
"Huh?"
His voice was flat and harsh. "Prove it, Miss Molly. Make me believe you."
"Prove it...?" My heart started pounding when I felt his hand move down between us. I started to labor for breath when I saw him unbuttoning his pants...
