A whining noise filled the night sky awakening Calder. He jumped from his makeshift bed and looked around trying to identify the sound as the noise became louder and caused his ears to ring in pain.
He glanced toward the edge of the camp and saw the men scrambling to their feet. From the chuck wagon, he saw Serina Jacob jumping down to the ground and making a mad dash to where he stood glancing around to make some sense in what was going on.
When Serina reached him, she reached out and grabbed onto him trembling in fright from the unknown. “What’s happening, Calder?” her husky voice filled his ear.
“I’m not sure,” he said, pushing back to put a little distance between them. “We’ll have to wait and see if the noise comes again.” For reasons unknown to Calder, he would have liked to have kept her snuggled close to him. He wasn’t sure if it was a protective measure or some other meaning urging him to cuddle her.
The noise eventually stopped much to Calder’s relief. “Why don’t you head over to the wagon and get some sleep,” Calder suggested to Serina.
“I don’t know if I can sleep,” she mumbled.
“Well, try anyway,” he said turning away.
He made his way over to Jim. Jim looked as astonished as Calder felt at the moment. “Did you see anything, Jim?” Calder asked.
“No, but I’m going to ride out and check on the herd. There’s something out there and I’m going to see if I can find it.”
“Hold on and I’ll tag along with you,” Calder walked toward his horse and picked up his saddle throwing it across the back of the big bay now acting skittish over the din earlier.
He mounted his horse and rode over to where Jim waited. Since hearing the blare whine, Calder had a strange feeling overwhelming him. Something was going to happen, but he didn’t know what.
