Bias, the timid but intrepid (against his will) investigator from the Greek city-state of Priene in ancient Ionia, is at it again in this tale of murder, prophecy, and intrigue. The two priests of the religious Panionion, of which Bias is the minor priest, are dispatched by the Ionic League council. They are to obtain advice from the mysterious Oracle at Didyma on how the League should react to the recent aggressive advances of the powerful army of the king of Lydia. Second only to the great Oracle at Delphi in the ancient Greek world, Didyma is rampant with intrigue, confusing predictions, and sexual fascination. During his quest, Bias runs up against Thrasybulus, the mighty tyrant of great Miletus, makes friends with the early scientist, Thales, and is bewitched by a beautiful, young widow. In the end,the investigator races against time to prevent a horrible blasphemy that could tear the League apart!
