The role of NGOs has been recognised as important to solve the multifarious problems and particularly to help improve the livelihood of the rural people. For achieving substantial and sustained poverty reduction, there is a need in the inclusion of civil society, non-governmental organisations and local democracy to enable the governance system. NGOs are considered development partners in Nepal. However, questions such as, Are NGOs better institutional options particularly for improving the livelihood of the poor people? have been coming from different quarters. In this context, this present study is mainly focused on the role of NGOs for improving the livelihood condition of the poor people who are living in the rural areas. For the purpose of this study, the functions of PLAN International-an international NGO working in Markhu Village Development Committee2 (VDC) of the Central Hill of Nepal and Backward Society Education (BASE)-a national NGO working in Hekuli VDC of the inner Terai3 of mid-western Nepal were selected.
