EXCERPT:

She almost missed it. She thought she heard something, so she waited for a moment. Susan rested the front door against her hip as she reached down to lock it. Setting her briefcase down silently, she leaned into the house. It must have been her imagination. She stepped in to take one more look around before she closed the Open House. She had already been through the house, putting little things back in place and was ready to go. Susan shook off her doubts until she heard it again.

Since her divorce, there was no hurry to get home and no one to take care of once she got there. Her kids were away at school and her ex was probably out cruising the bars trying to get laid. If it weren’t for her job, she’d have gone crazy. She liked her job. She liked helping people find a house where they could make a home. Having something to do and people who needed her made her feel worthwhile again. But she didn't feel that good about herself today. The day had been long and frustrating. She felt like an overbearing hostess who was hovering over her guests.

There had been a long parade of curious neighbors and bargain hunting investors coming through to see the property. The only time it had been interesting was when she and her assistant first got to the house. They were surprised to find the front door unlocked and shocked when they found two kids upstairs. Susan had no doubt that they were looking for a place to be alone when she saw them. The boy was quite a charmer though. Meeting them was the highlight of her day but it didn’t last. The rest of the day was pure drudgery. Luckily it was over.
