‘Hey Catherine, would you like some help with that?’
Catherine Raymond looked up from where she was struggling with a large pile of books. School had just finished for the afternoon and all of the year 10 kids had torn out of the room as fast as possible like usual, leaving her to clean up all the chaos they’d left behind all on her own. The young woman in front of her was Hannah, a teacher who’d been at the school a while and who she sometimes chatted with over a coffee or lunchtime meal when they both had some free time.
‘Thanks Hannah, would you mind? I’ve got so much to carry out to the car’
‘No problem’ Hannah replied, gathering up a few armfuls of books from the desks and holding open the classroom door. ‘Good day?’
‘Busy day’ Catherine sighed, thinking over how much marking she had to do tonight. Likely it was going to take up most of her evening. ‘You?’
‘Oh, the usual. Have you met the new History teacher yet? He’s pretty cute, apparently he just moved here from England!’ Hannah grinned, wiggling her eyebrows. Catherine laughed, shaking her head at her cheeky friend.
‘No, not yet. I’m sure we’ll meet sooner or later though.’ They walked through the quiet hallway and out of the building to the crowded parking lot. The sky was beginning to cloud over and the cool April air made her shiver a little as they walked across the pavement.
‘Oh look, there he is now actually! Mr. Emery! Mr. Emery, over here!’ Hannah yelled, waving towards a figure on the other side of the parking lot. He looked up and squinted briefly into the bright sunlight, then turned and opened the door to his blue car, then stepped into it. Catherine turned to her friend.
