This is part of a series of books in which particular verses are picked from books of the bible, and the issues of Prayer are explored, in the light of the mind of God for us.

In this book, we explore five topics, from different verses in the books of 2Samuel, Psalms and Proverbs. They are: Making requests of God; How prayer moves God; ‘Lead me and guide me’; Prayer against wicked deeds; and Opening the mouth in intercession.

Excerpts:

Making requests of God

“Jesus the Son of God also made a request from God that was not granted. God turned a blind eye to his request for your sake and mine (Mark 14:35-36). Jesus while nearing the cross was already feeling the pain of it in his “bones”, and he said he wants that the cup of punishment that he was to drink from the hand of God to pass from him. He went to the cross after his request was turned down; he went their bearing our sin, so that we will be able to receive salvation through his sacrifice.”

How prayer moves God

“But someone may say that since David did not use the name of Jesus how was he able to move God in prayer based on the foregoing logic? But he offered peace offerings and burnt offerings which were shadows of the real offering, Jesus the Christ who died as a sacrifice for the sins of men. The shadow pointed to the future work of Jesus and based on that God takes a rain cheque on the needs of the people at that time that he would catch later. The offerings of David pointing to Christ is the cheque “forward dated” that allows God, the God of Justice to act on behalf of man, moved by prayer even when Jesus was yet to die for the sins of humanity, since a Holy God is fundamentally turned off by the sinful nature of man.”

‘Lead me and guide me’

“In the story of Joseph, we see that he needed to operate by wisdom of God to be able to preserve Egypt in the time of famine. He knew the way to go for the nation, through the wisdom of God in him. Because he knew the way to God to save the whole nation from an impending starvation, he was made the leader (Genesis 41). The man guided by God, knows the right way to do things and qualifies to be the leader.”

Prayer against wicked deeds

“The most important work we can do is the work of prayer. It is the work in secret that God will reward publicly according to the words of Jesus, and because of that, he wants to prime us to put premium on prayer. Are you submitting to his priming?”

Opening the mouth in intercession

“There are lots of spiritual effort that goes into intercession, in time, in fasting, in secluding yourself, in not seeking the limelight, but the God who sees in secret will reward you openly (Matthew 6:5-6). And the ultimate open reward is before the white throne judgement of God, where in the view of all the Christians across all nations you are rewarded with crowns (2Corinthians 5:9-10) for you special service of prayer, with an eternally guaranteed greatness.”
